Planning for Planning?

I am putting together my account planning portfolio finally.....here's the first draft of my "about me".....

(About Me)

I was 19 years old the first time I boarded an airplane. The first time I exited an airplane was in Paris France. I don’t speak French. I was alone, so I did what I do best. I took advantage of my “bad luck” and unplanned layover by grabbing my backpack and making my way into the city and to the Eiffel Tower. Since then I have swam in 3 oceans, traveled through 7 countries, received mail in 3 major cities on 2 continents and have attempted to learn 4 languages.

I have a thing for new experiences.

My “ah ha!” advertising moment was not a generic “I saw this, thought that” ad moment, the “1984” commercial or discovering that advertising has the power to sell someone a dream. Instead I was inspired by my fellow intern row inhabitants during a summer internship at Chiat Day in Los Angeles. Some questionable stir fry and about 12 creative minds squished together at a lunch table posed the question “Would you eat yourself if you tasted like your favorite food?” After a week of rules and possible commercial ideas springing from this I knew I was hooked. If the people in this industry are half as creative as the interns, I’m in. Just hide the thin mint cookies.

The first step to becoming a pirate is (intern)rowing the boat.

As Florida State’s NSAC team Account Planner, I learned that after all the research and finding the something in a whole pile of nothing is done, that the most important part of the Account Planners job is the ability to inspire. You can tell a kid in a sandbox to make a castle all day long, but if they aren’t inspired to greatness all you’re going to get from them is a sandcastle that’s simply good enough.

But good enough is never enough.

I am a child of culture and technology. I would die without my Netvibes page, have withdrawals from my Tumblr account, and shake if I was torn away from reading Copyranter or watching ESPN. I love advertising because it’s like kindergarten… no holds bar creativity. I am amazing fun in a neat but not so tidy package.

My name is Nicole Brooker and I am an Account Planner in the making.

Sorry Again.

The Blue Light has nothing to do with K Mart

Way back when, in November, I was desperatly emailing human resource folk in  NwhyC  for informational interviews...most of them were like Hell yea come on chicky...but one stood out.

She said she had experienced FSU ad students before blah blah and blah and that "Mediocrity would not be Accepted"....and did I still wanna interview?

My thoughts:

1. Who is this woman!?!?!?!
2. I like her cut to the point/cut the throat approach...
3. Yes, yes I love your company and I would like to meet.

While in the city I had 7 interviews, 3 of them were excellent, but this one in particular was great. I kept in contact, despite the woman kind of rcking my tires a bit over the course of the next few months.

Friday I was offered a paid internship in the planning department for this summer.

Moral of the Story:
Never back down when you want something, because wanting something bad enough may make you stand out and make you the best for the job....

Cheers.

PS The "Blue Light" is a term my friend Justin passed on to me...it implies that things just happen to work out, so don't worry because ya gots the blue light.

Refresh What?

Walking to class this morning my hyper-sensitive advertising engrained eyes noticed something funny/interesting/sad....As I dredged along, bundled up christmas story style (it was 23 degrees...in Florida....) up a hill and through a parking lot, I passed a ditch. This ditch is next to fraternity row, if you will, so you can imagine that every Tuesday/Thursday there are different interesting/gross/strange things of the alcoholic/party/skanky persuasion in and around it.

I should have taken a picture of it, but I was running late. As I passed the fence surrounding the ditch, there is an empty fast food soft drink cup stuck upside down on top of the chain link prongs. it's a pepsi cup. It has the refresh everything branding on it. Vote for what you care about etc etc etc......So do you care about the environment? Probably not if the cup is just chilling on a fence....this brought me back to a blog I read the other day...they said that the refresh everything campaign would either be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or the worst thing since global warming, or something like that.....ironic that this generation chose to litter when we are all so "green"....trend reports tend to forget that just because a consumer wants to be one way / sees themselves one way doesn't mean they actually are that way.....

And that todays rant.

Compass, encompass , whatevs

Sitting in class this evening I had an epiphany. I pull my chap stick out of my bag.....my chap stick looks like a glue stick....I decide to get up to go to the bathroom, no big deal class hadn't actually started yet. There is a sign on one of the stalls, "Out of Order"....someone has cleverly written on it , "Really? Still?" and another "A sigh of the times"....

No, that's not the epiphany...but somehow this thought triggered me to start doodling things down on my notebook...I am no to-do lister by any means, but I started. I wrote about how I am Jacks paranoid over worked hyperventilating lack of lung capacity, compasses-less lung capacity.

The I thought about it, if that sign were in
  • UCD it would be : Clean/Public Relations/it would be spell checked and in the AP style...
  • UCC: drawn on...probably turned into an ad
  • Fine ARts: more colorful...perhaps no sign at all, just some dada influenced empty, doorless bathroom stall...maybe even Duchamp'ed a bit with the "out of order" signed on the toilet itself.
  • E school: untouched...engineers are afraid of fucking things up....Freud blames their parents.
This sign was funny to observe, but amazing for my brain to take part in recreating it elsewhere on campus. For chirsts sake, its just a stupid sign.

I walked back to my seat in Dodd hall. BTW I was in Williams when I saw the sign, ie creative writing kids everywhere. This for some reason trggered a few ideas....

In the description of a planner, in every description, it says  that the planner is very inquisitive, a real "Why?" asker....my thing is, I always ALWAYS ask "Why Not?"...not Why. This led to another thought..."Oh shit, maybe I am a creative after all.....a strategic thinking creative"....Yahtzee....

So now I return to my true self, my roots, my "passion"....Why can't I have an empire state of mind in the city that sleeps on the beach? A psychic once told my mother I would run away to California....I did it once, why not do it again? Or New York....thinking back I fucking love that place. Or London...I've never been but it sounds bloody amazin.

So I have a compass....I am still applying to VCU/Miami Ad...but I am no officially on the job hunt. F that noise, I wanna work.... Compass is in my hand, even though it's still spinning, I feel a lot better.
